Woldringfold

The field path decants onto the metalled drive which takes us past High Hurst stables. Watch out for the Knopper Galls! Finally an avenue of Horse Chestnut takes us away from the Ivory’s and onto Burnthouse Lane. Turn left and then after 300m fork right at the gatehouse into the grounds of Woldringfold. There could be more Horse Mushrooms here. I have noticed that, although growing in grass, they seem to associate with field oaks, investing them in a ring at the radius of the lower branches.

There is a rather ragged unprepossessing grove of Scots Pine to the left of the path. If you take a look you may find the Shaggy Parasol, slightly smaller than the more common variety and without the snakeskin markings on the stem. It is edible but is said to upset some.

Lepiota rhacodes - 7 October 2000 - Woldringfold

The grounds of Woldringfold are opened once a year to visitors. There are certainly some fine trees here but today take care to stick to the footpath until you get to the metalled road at the northern side. Follow the road north and then east past the walled garden (which looks as if it could do with a makeover) and a row of fruiting fig trees.                                                                            next
