The Ivory’s

The footpath descends from the ridge down the edge of piece of woodland that is has recently been cleared of rampant sycamore. There is now a mass planting of mixed broad-leaved trees around the existing oaks.

On my recent visit I was surprised to find Grisette, Amanita vaginata, in some frequency. It is said to be edible but, belonging to the same genus as the deadly Death-cap and the hallucinogenic Fly Agaric, it is perhaps best left on the woodland floor. At the end of the wooded section I am always pleased to note a Cut-leaved Elder growing in tandem with its uncut counterpart.

Turn to the east immediately on leaving the wood and follow the path across the fields. Look across at the field-oaks for underneath them may be a crop of the excellent Horse Mushroom, Agaricus arvensis. The size, habitat and the full fleshy cogged ring make identification a simple matter.
